The history of the Norwegian Maritime Competence Center began as a result of conversations between Westregruppen and Rolls-Royce.
Historical milestones for NMK

2008
The story of the Norwegian Maritime Competence Center started in April 2008 as a result of conversations between Westregruppen and Rolls-Royce.
The Norwegian Maritime Competence Center AS was formally established on May 5, 2008, and a year later, Rolls-Royce confirmed that they had chosen Ålesund and NMK as the location for the establishment of their European training center.
Right from the start and up until today, Kaj Bang Westre, as managing director, and Leif-Arne Langøy, as chairman, have been central to development and operations.
2010
After an extensive public process, the builder was able to start the construction of NMK on April 14, 2010.


2012
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon officiated the official opening of the Norwegian Maritime Competence Center on November 8, 2012.
Rolls Royce Marine simultaneously opened its European training center for civil marine.
2015
The NMK 2 extension of 15,000 m2 was approved by Ålesund Municipality and the work was initiated.


2017
NMK 2 was officially opened on November 22, 2017.
Present were top management from both Inmarsat Solutions, Kongsberg Maritime, and representatives from the entire maritime cluster.
The opening was conducted by three pepper robots from Newton Møre.
2018
Nobel Prize winner May-Britt Moser opens Mørelab and Newton Møre


2021
Breeam In Use – NMK Eiendom is the first building in Møre og Romsdal to be certified under the international Breeam In Use standard, rated as 'Very Good'.
After good work from operations and administration, the certification was reviewed and upgraded to Breeam In Use Excellent in 2023.
2024
Collaboration for Norwegian Maritime Competence Preparedness was established at Campus Ålesund.
The project is a collaboration between upper secondary schools, vocational colleges, NTNU, NMK, ÅKP, and the Maritime Forum Nordvest, based at NMK.
The forum focuses on ensuring that Norway has sufficient and appropriate competence to meet both civilian and military needs in the maritime industry now and in the future.
The forum aims to highlight how smart strategies can find solutions for education and competence enhancement within today's educational institutions.


2025
In 2025, the work on the extension of the current building mass and a larger upgrade for the tenants began. The work is planned to be carried out over a 2-year period.
