ESG and Sustainability

Right from the planning of the building at Borgundvegen 340, the owners have had ambitious goals for a sustainable structure. The center has a clear profile in sustainability and ESG, and serves as a regional driver for green transition and responsible development.

Breeam-In-Use

NMK is, as one of the first buildings in our region, certified according to the international Breeam-In-Use standard. The building achieved the grade of 'Very Good' in 2021, and has since continued to work towards the goal of 'Excellent'. This was achieved in 2024. The operations team and owners are continuing to strive to possibly achieve the highest grade 'Outstanding'.

Breeam-In-Use is a tool for measuring, improving, and documenting environmental performance and health-promoting qualities in existing buildings. At NMK, we actively use the certification for self-assessment so that we work systematically on improving the environmental performance of the building stock.

Green Arena Møre

In the period 2024-2026, the management and operations manager at NMK at Grønn Arena Møre will participate under the auspices of Sparebanken Møre and Energiråd AS. Focus on energy management, efficient energy use, and the use of renewable energy sources provides a good basis for the most energy-efficient operation of the building. The goal for Grønn Arena is to contribute to a significant reduction in energy consumption among the participating companies.

Collaboration for green skills

NMK is a central player in a broad collaboration between educational institutions, research environments, and the maritime industry. The collaboration aims to strengthen competence preparedness in Norway, both for civilian and military needs. Students at Campus Ålesund gain access to world-leading maritime technology, digital twins, and simulators, which provides them with a unique learning arena closely connected to the industry.

Education and innovation

Through NTNU, the Vocational School in Ålesund, Ålesund and Borgund Secondary Schools offer an environment tailored by NMK with connections to the business community. This includes both basic education and further education, with the aim of training professionals for all levels in the maritime value chain.

The maritime solutions of the future

NMK is also a facilitator for the development of green technology and future-oriented solutions for shipping and offshore. Through test facilities like Fjord Lab and collaboration with innovation environments, the center contributes to the development of zero-emission vessels, energy-efficient systems, and autonomous solutions. This makes NMK an important player in Norway's green transition within the maritime sector.

Carbon accounting

NMK has connected to Klara Karbon, a system from Klara ESG that uses AI technology to analyze accounting documents and calculate carbon emissions based on cost and activity levels. The reports provide detailed and accurate reports for ESG reporting and are a tool for making sound strategic decisions.

Source sorting in practice

NMK has implemented 100% source sorting, with a total of 18 different fractions for waste. This makes it possible to handle everything from paper and plastic to special waste in a way that minimizes environmental impact. An important measure has been the installation of cardboard and waste compactors, which has reduced both waste volume and transportation needs. The result is lower emissions and more cost-effective operations.

Environmental

NMK has taken significant steps to reduce its environmental footprint. The building is certified with BREEAM In-Use Excellent, which documents a high standard for energy efficiency, resource use, and environmentally friendly operation. Additionally, new areas with low energy needs are being developed, and emphasis is placed on sustainable material choices and technological solutions that support green innovation.

Social

The center is a meeting place for collaboration between the public sector, academia, and business. This includes educating the future maritime professionals, supporting apprentices, and developing competency preparedness for both civil and military needs. NMK facilitates social inclusion and knowledge sharing, and contributes to strengthening the local community through education and jobs.

Governance

NMK operates with a focus on transparency, collaboration, and long-term value creation. ESG principles are integrated into both operations and development projects, and NMK aims to present itself as a responsible actor in a sector with high demands for safety, innovation, and social responsibility.
